Sophocles is a tragedian, playwright, one of the three ancient Greek classical poets.
The play “Oedipus Rex” was written in the 5th century BC and is considered the standard of tragedy. It was used throughout the history of theatrical art, transforming the plot in accordance with the social context.
Theater for the ancient Greeks was one of the favorite forms of art and took the form of a competition for playwrights.
It is worth noting that all viewers knew the plot well, because it was based on ancient myths – the adaptation of the story brought pleasure.
The play “Oedipus Rex” entered the cohort of winners. Created by a brilliant poet during the Persian Wars, it reflects the social situation of cities, their decline and crisis, the cause of which, according to Sophocles’ story, is the wrath of the gods.
The action begins with a priest’s visit to the king – Oedipus. The petitioners beg the ruler to stop the plague, pestilence and misfortune that haunt the citizens. For advice, the ruler turns to the oracle: Thebes suffers because of the sin of murder – unknown people took the life of the past king and remained unpunished.
The play is also one of the first detective stories in history. Since the main character, who as a responsible ruler, must save his state from misfortune – find and punish the murderer, is the driver of the plot.
Oedipus is an arbitrary exile, he left his father’s kingdom to protect himself from a terrible prophecy that he would kill his father and marry his mother.
Arriving in another place, Oedipus gained fame and was elected governor, married Jocasta, the widow of the local ruler, who fell from the sword of an unknown person.
As an ideal ruler, Oedipus seeks the truth. The fiercest battle is waged in his memories, as he faces the choice of discovering the truth for himself and accepting it or forgetting it.
The right decision is difficult for Oedipus, because he is the viceroy of the gods, who left his throne and rightfully won a new one.
But being a faithful ruler, he continues his search for the terrible truth, he is the son of Jocasta, who was given as an infant to a childless ruler of a distant land. He, the king, who fled from his fate and caught up with it. He is the son who killed his father, married his mother and brought a plague to his lands.
Finding no excuse for himself, Oedipus gouges out his eyes to wash away his sin with blood and becomes an exile, setting off on a journey.
